Stage 1 of 4
About the metro
The NSW Government has committed funding to start work immediately on a metro rail system for Sydney. The first stage of the network will run from Rozelle to Central, the second stage will extend from Central to Westmead.
This investment in our city’s growth and prosperity will support and improve our other transport networks to relieve congestion and reduce travel times.
It will provide convenient transfers between other public transport systems, while operating completely independently of the current rail lines.
The broader metro network
In the longer term, a broader network of metros is planned. The metro network would serve major transport corridors that are not currently serviced by mass transit, or do not have the capacity to meet future needs.
This is expected to include many of Sydney’s most heavily used and congested bus corridors, such as Parramatta Road, Victoria Road, Anzac Parade and Military Road.
Two new metro lines are proposed to form the foundations of the metro network:
- Metro Line 1 City West line – from Westmead to the CBD and then beyond Rozelle to the north-west.
- Metro Line 2 City East line – from Malabar via Maroubra to the city and beyond to the Northern Beaches.
Sydney Metro Network Stage 1 (Central - Rozelle) would form the central spine to which other metros would link or interchange. As such, it is considered by the NSW Government to be the logical and first critical step in the transformation of Sydney’s transport system.
Integrated transport planning
In May 2009, the Chief Executives of RailCorp and Sydney Metro signed a partnership commitment, marking the start of a long-term and collaborative partnership between the two agencies in the delivery of public transport services to the people of Sydney.
