The trains

The metro trains will be at the heart of this new travel experience.

Train design

Single-deck, airconditioned trains with five carriages per train will operate on the Metro.

Each carriage will be approximately 22 metres long, giving a total train length of approximately 110 metres and capacity for approximately 1000 passengers per train. A frequency of 30 trains per hour allows for 30,000 passengers travelling to/from the CBD in peak hours.

Three double doors on each side of the carriages will allow passengers to move in and out quickly and easily.

Carriages will be connected by wide, fully enclosed gangways, which will help passengers move safely and easily throughout the train.

Seating will be on both sides of the carriages, in rows of two, with a wide centre aisle in between for a comfortable journey. The interior layout of the trains will be adaptable over their lifespan to accommodate changes in patronage, however there will always be generous space allowed for wheelchairs and prams.

Comfort and convenience

All trains will be air conditioned (for heating and cooling).

Visual information displays and audio announcements will provide passengers with up-to-date information throughout their journey.

Mobile telephone services will be available to passengers onboard the trains.

Targets will be set for train presentation ensuring that the internal and external presentation of the fleet will be of a high standard and passengers can travel in a pleasant environment.  Carriages will be cleaned every day inside and every three days outside.

Passengers with mobility difficulties will find the Metro ideal for independent travel. For instance there will be dedicated drop off points at stations, lifts to access platforms, trains will come flush to the platforms and there will be generous space for wheelchairs as well as regular seating within the carriages.

Train control

Metros operate to a self service philosophy with the latest designs having high levels of automation (eg they are driverless).

The trains and control systems are highly integrated to achieve excellent safety and reliability.

Fully automatic metro systems are successfully operating around the world in London, Copenhagen, Nuremburg and Singapore.

The trains on the Metro will be operated automatically from a central operations control centre.  The automatic control system will allow continuous monitoring of the trains, stations platforms and other facilities.
