Stage 1 of 4
What is a metro?
A metro is a modern rail system that offers a fast, frequent, reliable and sustainable transport service – just like those found in London, Paris, Copenhagen and New York.
Metro is not light rail, and it is not a tram – metros are faster and have more capacity.
Modern metros typically feature:
- convenient services arriving every 2-3 minutes in peak periods
- single-deck trains allowing people to get on and off quickly
- sleek, clean and uncluttered interiors
- automatic, driverless trains controlled from an Operations Control Centre
- state of the art security and commuter information systems
- smartcard ticketing
Although being well integrated with other transport services, metros usually operate as an independent system, and therefore are extremely reliable - they are not disrupted by delays on other networks.
By providing a fast, frequent, reliable and safe way to travel, metros make the environmentally friendly choice of taking public transport easier.
