Stage 1 of 4
Stage 1 Station Locations
The preferred station locations for the Stage 1 (Rozelle - Central) are outlined below.
More information about the station locations is available in the Sydney Metro Network Stage 1 Environmental Assessment.
Central Station
The metro station at Central is proposed to be located at the southern end of the CBD, to the north-east of Railway Square, on the western side and adjacent to RailCorp’s Central Station terminal building.
Central Station would be centrally located within the Western Forecourt of this historic location. Given that the majority of CityRail and all CountryLink services serve Central, the station would provide the primary interchange between metro and CityRail services.
Town Hall Square Station
Town Hall Square Station is proposed to be located under Pitt Street, between Bathurst and Park Streets. This location is within the midtown precinct of Sydney’s CBD, extending between Hyde Park and Darling Harbour and including the key landmarks of Town Hall, Pitt Street Mall and the Queen Victoria Building.
The location of Town Hall Square Station provides an opportunity to create a wider Town Hall precinct, in conjunction with the City of Sydney’s planned square on the Woolworths site adjoining CityRail’s Town Hall Station.
Martin Place Station
Martin Place Station is proposed to be located under Castlereagh Street, between Martin Place and King Street.
The metro station at Martin Place will provide the opportunity for commuters to interchange with services from the CityRail Eastern Suburbs and Illawarra lines as well as the Eastern Suburbs bus services that use Elizabeth Street.
Barangaroo-Wynyard Station
Barangaroo-Wynyard Station is proposed to be located beneath Margaret Street between Clarence and York streets. This location is within the western corridor of Sydney’s financial district.
A convenient pedestrian link will also be constructed as part of the project, between Barangaroo and Wynyard.
Pyrmont Station
The Pyrmont Station is proposed to be located under Union Square and has both an eastern entrance and a western entrance to ensure that effective access to significant attractors and wider catchments is achieved.
Sydney Metro has prepared two options for the location of the eastern station entrance.
Under option 1, the eastern station entrance would be located within the property boundaries of four terrace shops on Union Street. This option would require the demolition of a number of existing commercial properties.
Under option 2, the eastern station entrance would be located on the vacant corner block of Union and Pyrmont streets, next to the existing terraces. Under this option, the frontage and the bulk of the four terrace shops on Union Street would be kept intact. A section at the rear of these properties would need to be removed to accommodate essential station services.
The western entrance for both options would be located at the corner of Mount and Miller streets.
White Bay
Infrastructure will be provided at White Bay for a future metro station. The location of the future White Bay Station comprises the land at White Bay adjacent to the Western Distributor, Robert Street and the disused White Bay Power Station site.
It is intended that White Bay will be used as a construction and spoil removal site for the project.
Rozelle Station
Rozelle Station is proposed to be located beneath Victoria Road, immediately west of the intersection with Darling Street. The Rozelle Station location would facilitate a potential future extension of the metro to the north-west via the Victoria Road corridor.
A new purpose-built depot for stabling and maintaining metro trains is also proposed at the former Rozelle Marshalling Yard, adjacent to the City West Link Road leading from the Western Distributor and Lilyfield Road.
