Stage 1 of 4
Key Benefits
Sydney Metro is a critical part of the Government’s targeted investment plan to improve Sydney’s transport network.
Sydney Metro Network Stage 1 (Rozelle - Central) will:
- introduce fast, frequent and reliable metro rail to the city, with services arriving every 2-3 minutes in the peak
- provide the foundation for a wider metro network for Sydney, enabling future extensions to be built to the West, North West and South East
- reduce travel times into the CBD, with a trip from Rozelle to Central taking approximately 10 minutes
- ease congestion of bus and rail services by providing a new public transport service within and across the CBD
- provide the opportunity to generate additional capacity on the CityRail network by using Central Station’s underused country platforms as a gateway for the Metro through to the CBD
- reduce crowding at some of CityRail’s busiest stations by providing new metro stations in the Barangaroo-Wynyard, Martin Place, Town Hall and Central precincts
- provide the first public transport link for the proposed new Barangaroo development precinct
- support the long-term global competitiveness and attractiveness of Sydney by bringing the world-class reliability and efficiency of a metro service to the city for employees, residents, students and visitors
Sydney Metro Network Stage 2 (Central - Westmead)
- support expected growth along Sydney’s busiest transport corridor, particularly at Parramatta, Sydney Olympic Park and Burwood
- slash travel times into the CBD – Leichhardt to Central in 5 minutes, Parramatta to Central in 24 for example
- relieve road and rail congestion by extending rail access to additional areas of Sydney, giving more commuters the choice and opportunity to use public transport
- bring direct rail services for the first time to Camellia, Silverwater, Five Dock, Leichhardt, Camperdown and Broadway,
- service three major shopping centres (Leichhardt, Five Dock and Camperdown); two hospitals (Westmead and Royal Prince Alfred); and the University of Sydney
- encourage urban renewal in potential development areas including Parramatta East, Rosehill, Camellia and Silverwater
- reduce greenhouse gases by providing a greener alternative to the private vehicle
In the longer term, a broader network of metros is planned, including extensions to the North West and South East. Combined, the Sydney Metro network will link Sydney’s key economic corridors, improve access to jobs, reduce travel times and emissions, and relieve congestion on our road and rail networks.
